Hosted by the Iowa Restaurant Association Education Foundation, the Iowa ProStart Invitational is the High School Culinary and Restaurant Management State Championship among Iowa ProStart Schools. The top teams in both the culinary and management portions earn thousands of dollars in scholarships to put toward their post-secondary education. The champions also  advance to represent Iowa at the National ProStart Invitational (2018 Invitational will be held in Providence, RI April 27-29, 2018) where even more scholarship money and bragging rights are up for grabs, as well as the opportunity to connect with industry professionals from across the country.

CULINARY COMPETITION 
  • This “Top Chef” style competition challenges culinary teams to develop a unique menu for a three-course meal, complete with recipes and food costs, and prepare that meal in 60 minutes using two butane burners—with no electricity or running water . Judges walk the competition floor and evaluate students on their menu, degree of difficulty, food safety and sanitation, knife skills, cooking procedures, food costing, teamwork, taste and presentation of their meal.
MANAGEMENT COMPETITION 
  • This  “Shark Tank” style competition challenges management teams to develop an original restaurant concept from the ground up and pitch their proposal to judges from top hospitality locations across the state and post-secondary educational facilities. Students are evaluated on their concept, marketing strategies, menu, recipes and food costs, operations and critical thinking skills.
