Senator Rick Bertrand Named Iowa Restaurant Association's Legislator of the Year

(Des Moines, Iowa) October 17, 2012— Sioux City Republican Senator Rick Bertrand (District 1) has been named the Iowa Restaurant Association’s 2012 Legislator of the Year.  The honor was presented to the Senator at the Association’s annual awards gala by the Chairmen of both the Iowa Restaurant Association and National Restaurant Association Board of Directors Mike Rastrelli of Clinton, Iowa and Phil Hickey of Atlanta, Georgia.

“This award honors the legislator who goes above and beyond to champion hospitality issues at the statehouse,” said Jessica Dunker, president and CEO of the Iowa Restaurant Association. “Senator Bertrand was a true advocate for the industry this past session on many issues, but in particular in helping pass infusion legislation.”

Proposed liquor infusion legislation had initially passed in the Iowa Senate on a 49 to 1 vote, but was dropped behind closed doors by the Iowa House. Bertrand was able to re-add the proposal in the final Standings Bill which was passed at the end of session. The new infusion legislation became law July 1, 2012.
Bertrand’s own business experience gives him a deeper level of understanding on hospitality-related issues. His Irish-themed pub McCarthy & Bailey's Irish Pub was the anchor business for the redevelopment of a section of downtown Sioux City. A second company, JAR Imports, introduced and now distributes Argentinian wines throughout the state.

“Senator Bertrand consistently promotes a pro-business agenda and he was endorsed by the Iowa Association of Business and Industry as well as the winner of our legislative award,” said Dunker. “We’re looking forward to working together on many issues in the coming legislative sessions.”
