Chef John Andres, Executive Chef at BOS Contemporary Cuisine and Beverage and Food Director at the Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel has been selected the Iowa Restaurant Association Chef of the Year. Andres accepted the award on September 23 at an awards ceremony at the Meadows Event Center at Prairie Meadows. The honor was presented to Andres by the Chairmen of both the Iowa Restaurant Association and National Restaurant Association Board of Directors Mike Rastrelli of Clinton, Iowa and Phil Hickey of Atlanta, Georgia.
“This award honors the professional chef who exemplifies creativity, culinary excellence, and service to the profession and the industry,” said Jessica Dunker, president and CEO of the Iowa Restaurant Association. “John not only delights his patrons with his culinary skills, he also opens his kitchen and schedule to students in Des Moines.”
BOS Chef Opens Kitchen to Central Campus Students
Andres started in the industry at age 16 as a dishwasher. Years later he enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. He joined the Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel team in 2008 and helped open BOS shortly thereafter. Chef Andres is quick to credit his success to great mentors and he honors those mentors by working with students himself.
Andres serves as a chef mentor to the culinary students from Des Moines Central Campus on a regular basis. Additionally, two weekends per year he allows the students to work side-by-side with the BOS team for a fundraising dinner that benefits the ProStart and other student culinary programs.
