Twice now I’ve had to be in Cedar Falls and twice I have stopped in to myVerona in historic downtown Cedar Falls. This restaurant is home to the Iowa Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Employee of the Year Mike Beecher –but his propensity for hospitality is not a solo effort. Everyone here goes above and beyond to make sure your dining experience is top notch. My first visit to myVerona I had several hours on my hands so I went to the fine dining area of the restaurant. It has an upscale casual ambiance and I enjoyed Salmone Radicchio Spinaci which is grilled Atlantic salmon with a light balsamic marinade and grilled radicchio served with a sauté of crispy pancetta, spinach, capers and tomatoes drizzled with lemon beurre blanc-- yum. It was too early in my day to add a glass of wine, but had I opted to have one, I would have been in the right place as they are a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence winner. myVerona was literally named “my” “Verona” because owner Russ Wassendorf so loved Verona, Italy that he wanted to bring a little of Verona to Cedar Falls. My second trip I was in a bit of a hurry so I popped in to their deli side of the restaurant. The Verona Deli whipped me up a specialty sandwich in no time. Next time I head to that part of the state I hope to visit the vineyard-style patio they were adding to their establishment when I was last there! Perhaps Jess Rafoth, one of the mixologists at myVerona and the winner of this year’s People’s Choice Award at the annual Iowa Restaurant Association Celebrating Excellence Gala, will have yet another unique martini for me to try!
