Heading home on Interstate 80 the other day and I couldn’t resist a side trip to the Amana Colonies – the area has long been a favorite celebration spot for my extended family. I popped in to the Ox Yoke Inn to see Owner Bill Leichsenring and team. I had some wonderful coconut cream pie—I even took a full pie back to Des Moines for my family where it was quickly devoured! I had just been to the Ox Yoke Inn to celebrate my twin daughters 15th birthdays with a group of high school girls. We stayed close by and shopped at the outlet mall. The girls LOVED the family style service and shared sides. We must have eaten 6 bowls of the green beans alone. We tried a little bit of everything including Ox Yoke Inn’s German specialties Sauerbraten, Chicken Schnitzel and of course Wiener Schnitzel which is
dusted with cracker meal (just like my Grandmother used to make)! I come from a long line of German-influence cooks and Ox Yoke Inn offers a truly authentic German eating experience! There is something for everyone on the menu and there is no leaving this family-owned and operated restaurant without pie! If you’re traveling between Des Moines and Iowa City, I’d highly recommend diverting to the colonies for some great food (and shopping).
