Saturday night was celebration night. My husband and I were joined by friends celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary. We headed to downtown Des Moines for an evening at 801 Chophouse. New Asst. General Manager Paul Ellis and team took great care of us. We decided to make it an “event” evening and started with grapefruit martinis and a bottle of red. Knowing we had to have steaks for dinner we sampled seared scallops and shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. It was so good that my husband couldn’t resist ordering the shellfish pan roast from the Chef’s Fresh menu as an entrée. He knew he was safe doing that because I ordered a porterhouse steak smothered in maytag bleu cheese with the intention of sharing it with him—to be honest, I could have shared it with the whole table, but opted to take the remainder home. Our friends also had steak dishes—including the medallions. Everything was cooked exactly to our order (mine was truly rare, my girlfriend likes hers well done.) We filled the table with sides and ended the night with a soufflé (chocolate of course) and some crème brulle. 801 Chophouse is a great example of the award winning fine dining we have in Iowa! Go out and try something new!
