On Friday night, I had to meet my parents “halfway” between Mason City and Des Moines. Hickory Park was an easy choice (yes, I’m well aware that my parents had to drive more than half way—but no one minds when we’re landing at one of Ames’ true “destination restaurants.” ) As always, Hickory Park had a bustling weekend dinner crowd, but they have one of the most efficient systems I’ve ever seen for seating people, so no one minded the brief (truly less than 10 minute) wait. I was quickly reminded what a great family environment Hickory Park is as our entire party, which included two of my teenage daughters, my husband, and my parents, was excited to be there. Our menu choices? We had a little of everything including the Swiss, Bacon and Guacamole Burger, a couple of Hickory Park Specials –which includes ribs and chicken—a smoked sausage and chicken combo, and an Old Fashioned Hot Meat Dinner (beef). We ran the gamut on sides –from salad to cottage cheese and fries. Oh and of course, there’s that ice cream menu…. Well worth the stop and certainly not the last time I’ll be writing about visiting this Ames (can I say Cyclone?) traditional favorite spot.
