First day on the job and I celebrated at lunch with IRA VP of Education and Development May Schaben at one of downtown Des Moines’ newest restaurants—Americana Restaurant & Lounge. What a great (and eclectic) crowd! They are obviously drawing from the business community and beyond. Sitting directly across from the Pappajohn Sculpture Garden in Western Gateway Park, Americana delivers exactly the urban ambiance you’d expect (and desire) in a downtown restaurant and lounge—which is a converted historic building. They truly do “celebrate the swagger” of the cocktail culture—simply reading through the cocktail menu alone is worth the trip. Being that I had to return to work that afternoon, I opted for an iced tea and a Champagne Salad with Salmon. May had the Chicken, Apple & Brie Panini (which I had to sample). Oh my… great cuisine. General Manager Will Carvalho and crew took great care of us on this 100+ degree day. Can’t wait to come back for their Sunday brunch (as well as a classic cocktail).
